Kanoneiland
Geography and History
Kanoneiland is a lovely riverside settlement in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Kanoneiland is situated on the largest inland island in the Orange River Valley. It is, in fact, the biggest river settlement in the country. Towns in close proximity to Kanoneiland include Groblershoop, Port Nolloth, Keimoes and Kakamas.
In 1928, a group of 52 private settlers began to clear Kanoneiland for cultivation. The irrigation scheme in the area supports the thriving vineyards that are quite magnificent to look at and In winter, the island can hardly be seen for the vineyards!
Activities
Virtually every inch of soil is under irrigation. Enjoy driving between the many vineyards, a spit-roast, home-baked breads, several traditional desserts and locally produced wines.
Take a guiede tour of Kanoneiland, it is an experience not to be missed! Kanoneiland offers an abundance of lush foliage and fields.
One can enjoy the traditional meals of the islanders as well as the delicious locally produced wines on a guided tour - up to 20 people can be catered for.
